MyTOWN Shopping Centre has welcomed Ideas International into its growing ecosystem of community-focused initiatives. Through this partnership, MyTOWN reinforces its vision of being more than just a retail destination—emerging as a vibrant space where education, personal growth and inclusivity converge.

Softly opened on 6th March 2025, the new Ideas International campus located adjacent to MyTOWN, marks a significant milestone in expanding access to quality education for refugee and stateless youth. The site, once a project office, has been reimagined and transformed into a sustainable, purpose-built learning environment that can accommodate up to 600 students.

“Located next to one of Kuala Lumpur’s most vibrant commercial centres, the new campus symbolises hope, creativity and resilience,” said Stephanie Van Aken, Head of Operations of Ideas International. “Our students now have access to a space that not only supports their academic growth but also inspires them to dream bigger. We are grateful to be part of a community that champions inclusivity and opportunity.”

Reimagining Space for Learning: A Thoughtful Transformation

The renovation process, which took over a year to complete, was guided by the principles of sustainability, flexibility and accessibility, all with the goal of reimagining space for learning in an urban context. Key upgrades and technical highlights include:

  • Structural Reconfiguration: Internal walls were restructured to create multi-use classrooms and breakout spaces that support both individual and collaborative learning.
  • Acoustic Enhancements: Sound insulation and acoustic panelling were installed to reduce noise transfer and improve focus, especially in open-plan learning zones.
  • Natural Light s Ventilation: Windows were expanded and strategically placed to maximise natural lighting and airflow, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and HVAC systems.
  • Tech-Ready Infrastructure: The campus is equipped with high-speed internet, integrated AV systems and digital learning tools across all classrooms to support a blended learning model.
  • Eco-Friendly Materials: The renovation prioritised recycled and low-VOC materials to create a healthier indoor environment for students and staff.
  • Inclusive Access: Ramps, wide doorways and accessible washrooms were incorporated to ensure full accessibility for all students, regardless of mobility needs.

Founded in 2014 and recognised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Ideas International offers a well-rounded and future-focused education. In addition to following the Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level curriculum, the Academy enriches students’ learning experience with subjects such as coding, physical education, human and life skills, art and music.

Currently, the school supports 183 students from diverse nationalities. Of these, 130 are UNHCR cardholders while 53 are regular fee-paying students – all united under one mission: to learn, grow and gain access to opportunities beyond their current circumstances.

Driven by the belief that every child deserves a chance to learn, Ideas International is staffed by a passionate and professional team, including local teachers qualified in international school curricula, as well as international educators and experienced management staff. Together, they provide not just academic guidance, but also vital life skills, leadership training and emotional support to help students thrive.

This collaboration marks a significant step in reinforcing MyTOWN’s role as a community hub for positive change—where education, culture and community come together. It also reflects Ikano Retail’s broader commitment to long-term initiatives that foster inclusivity and opportunity across the communities it serves.

“At MyTOWN, we envision a space that is more than just a place to shop. It’s a place where people can connect, learn and grow together,” said Azhan Che Mat, General Manager of MyTOWN Shopping Centre. “By welcoming Ideas International into our community, we are proud to be a place that nurtures learning and belonging for everyone, regardless of their background.”
