Duolingo expands Chess PvP mode to Android, debuts first Indonesia activation

Duolingo, the world’s leading learning application, has officially rolled out its Chess Player-versus-Player (PvP) mode on Android devices, expanding access to millions of learners worldwide following its successful debut on iOS in late 2025.

The new feature enables users to compete against real opponents in real time, adding a social and competitive layer to the app’s beginner-friendly chess course designed to strengthen strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.

The expansion comes amid growing demand for interactive learning formats. In a recent study involving Indonesian students, 75 per cent of respondents reported feeling more motivated and engaged when lessons were delivered through gamified experiences.

Built on the Duolingo Method, which emphasises active learning over rote memorisation, the chess course introduces players to the fundamentals – including how each piece moves – before progressing to tactical puzzles and guided mini-matches.

Around 75 per cent of the curriculum is puzzle-based, offering hands-on practice in core tactics, while the remainder includes mini and full matches where learners apply their knowledge in simulated and live scenarios.

Learners are guided by Oscar, Duolingo’s in-app chess coach, as they advance through personalised lessons that gradually increase in complexity, from assisted moves to independently solving checkmate challenges.

Irene Tong, Regional Marketing Manager for Southeast Asia, said early engagement on iOS had been encouraging, and the Android rollout would significantly broaden access, particularly in mobile-first markets such as Indonesia.

“We have observed that competing against another person can feel intimidating for some learners. We are working on updates to make PvP mode more welcoming and enjoyable, especially for beginners. Chess is ultimately about connection and critical thinking, and we want to make that experience accessible and empowering,” she said.

Tong added that introducing PvP mode to Android also improves global match availability, resulting in shorter waiting times – particularly for higher ELO-rated players.

To access the feature, users can navigate to the ‘Matches’ tab and select ‘Play a Person’, where they will be paired with opponents of similar skill levels.

The company is also developing additional enhancements, including the ability to play with friends, game review tools, web platform expansion, and more advanced course content aimed at supporting learners across different proficiency levels.

Extending the experience beyond the digital platform, Duolingo recently hosted its first-ever chess pop-up activation in Indonesia at Taman Literasi Blok M, Jakarta, from Feb 6 to 13. The venue was transformed into an interactive learning zone featuring a giant chessboard, live puzzle sessions, mini lessons and exclusive rewards.

Visitors also had the opportunity to meet King Duo, Duolingo’s mascot, and participate in real-life chess challenges inspired by the in-app course.

The Duolingo Chess course is available free of charge on Android and is currently offered in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese.
