The Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) has emphasized that all educational institutions across the country must strictly follow the guidelines for preventing Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) to stop infections from spreading further in schools and hostels.
Director-General of Education, Dr. Mohd. Azam Ahmad, said the ministry has issued the Guidelines for the Prevention of ILI Transmission in Educational Institutions, which serve as a key reference for implementing more structured and effective control and preventive measures.
According to him, an official reminder letter regarding the guidelines was distributed to all schools through the State Education Departments (JPN) and District Education Offices (PPD) on October 6.
Among the important steps highlighted is the immediate isolation of students showing symptoms in the school infirmary or hostel’s sick room before seeking further medical treatment.
“Parents or guardians must be contacted immediately to bring their children home, or the school may take them to the nearest health facility with parental consent,” he said in a statement today.
Dr. Mohd. Azam also advised that students who exhibit symptoms such as fever, cough, or cold should remain at home and avoid crowded areas to prevent further spread of the infection.
In addition, he encouraged the use of face masks, particularly during close interactions or in public areas. He stressed that awareness of personal hygiene and school cleanliness must be continuously strengthened to ensure the safety of everyone in the school community.
“Parents play a major role in monitoring their children’s health. They must remain alert to any early signs of infection and seek medical attention without delay,” he added.
He said the MOE will continue to work closely with the Ministry of Health (MOH), particularly through the Disease Control Division, to monitor the spread of ILI on an ongoing basis.
“The entire education community is reminded to always prioritize cleanliness, health, and safety at all times,” he said.
This proactive measure aims to ensure the wellbeing of students, teachers, and the entire school community, protecting them from the threat of contagious diseases and maintaining a safe learning environment for all.
