Malaysia and Indonesia have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing strategic collaboration in higher education and research, with renewed emphasis on strengthening institutional and academic linkages between both nations.

Malaysia’s Higher Education Minister, Zambry Abdul Kadir, said discussions with his Indonesian counterpart, Brian Yuliarto, during a two-day working visit to the republic, had paved the way for the establishment of joint research clusters involving experts from both countries.

He said the proposed clusters would focus on key priority areas, including food security, the green economy, renewable energy and artificial intelligence (AI), reflecting shared regional and global challenges.

“We have agreed in principle to establish dedicated clusters in these fields by identifying leading experts from Malaysia and Indonesia to collaborate and advance the identified sectors,” he said in a statement.

Zambry emphasised that both countries possess substantial academic and research expertise that should be harnessed collectively rather than developed in isolation.

“There is considerable strength on both sides. It would be a missed opportunity if we do not fully leverage the expertise available in our respective institutions,” he added.

The collaboration is expected to involve selected higher learning institutions from Malaysia and Indonesia, as well as researchers operating under the Malaysia–Indonesia Academic Consortium (KAMI), which serves as a platform to facilitate cross-border academic engagement.

Preliminary discussions have also been initiated between representatives of Education Malaysia and Indonesia’s higher education authorities to refine the implementation framework and operational details of the proposed initiatives.

Zambry noted that the outcomes of the discussions would be entrusted to the relevant agencies in both countries for further action, adding that no specific timeline had been set at this stage as the identification of research priorities and participating experts was still underway.

The strengthened partnership underscores the longstanding bilateral ties between Malaysia and Indonesia, particularly in advancing knowledge exchange, innovation and sustainable development through academic cooperation.
