The Ministry of Education (MOE) will introduce a new subject known as ‘Alam dan Manusia’ (Nature and Humanity) for Year One pupils beginning the 2027 school session, replacing four existing subjects — Science, Health Education, Visual Arts, and Music.

In a statement, the ministry said ‘Alam dan Manusia’ will serve as an Integrated Learning subject that combines multiple disciplines, including Science, Health Education, Visual Arts, Music, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and Digital Education.

“The subject integrates various fields of knowledge to provide a more holistic and enriching learning experience for pupils,” the statement read.

According to MOE, this initiative aims to support individual learning needs and enhance the overall quality of teaching and learning across primary schools.

The new subject will be delivered through a team-teaching approach, involving two teachers conducting lessons together in one classroom. The ministry explained that this method allows teachers to complement each other’s expertise, ensuring lessons are more engaging, creative and effective.

At the Lower Primary level, the focus will remain on mastering literacy and numeracy (the 3Rs – reading, writing, and arithmetic), as well as character development to strengthen pupils’ foundational skills.

“To achieve this, the number of subjects will be reduced to allow pupils to concentrate on building core competencies more effectively,” the ministry said.

The introduction of ‘Alam dan Manusia’ is part of the broader 2027 School Curriculum Reform, which emphasises integrated and experiential learning to produce well-rounded, adaptable, and future-ready students.

Through this new subject, MOE hopes to nurture creativity, strengthen foundational knowledge, and promote a balanced educational experience that connects academic, artistic, and practical learning in a single, unified framework.
