The Sarawak government is set to offer free tertiary education focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) starting next year, as part of efforts to prepare the younger generation for an increasingly digital and technological future.
Datuk Michael Tiang, Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, described the initiative as a key part of the state’s digital economy roadmap.
“This is a crucial step in empowering our youth to lead Sarawak into a more advanced digital age,” he said.
Tiang, who is also the Pelawan assemblyman, shared the announcement during the Sarawak Children’s Art and Literature Festival (SCALF) 2025 at the Sarawak State Library in Sibu. He commended the event for offering a range of educational activities for children, including face drawing, storytelling, and aerospace-themed programs.
He also praised the participation of uniformed services like the Royal Malaysia Police and the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), who used the festival as an opportunity to educate young attendees on safety and crime prevention.
“Interactive activities are essential in today’s tech-driven world. The festival provides an ideal space for children to explore and learn,” Tiang added.
The deputy minister further emphasized the importance of the Sarawak State Library as a hub for nurturing curiosity and expanding knowledge through interactive learning experiences.
The event was attended by Fairul Azli, Regional Manager of Sarawak State Library Sibu, and Programme Coordinator Nur Amanina Mastani.
