Education+TVET Asia recently had the pleasure of exploring the journey of Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), a rising force in Malaysia’s higher education landscape. In a recent interview, its Vice Chancellor, YBhg. Prof. Datuk Ts. Dr. Massila Kamalrudin, gives an insight into the university’s significant milestones, innovations and its integral role in shaping the future of technical education in Malaysia.

Established in 2000 as the nation’s first technical public university, UTeM has consistently expanded its scope to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world. Today, it stands as a beacon of excellence, contributing to Malaysia’s digital transformation, sustainable development and socio-economic progress. With a clear focus on applied knowledge, UTeM bridges theory with practice, creating real-world solutions while producing highly skilled graduates. It has grown into a comprehensive institution with seven faculties, four centres of excellence, and thousands of students from across the country and abroad.

“UTeM has grown from a niche technical institution into a dynamic university that leads in technical education, research and community service,” shares Prof. Massila, who has been part of UTeM’s growth since its early years.

The evolution of UTeM over the last two decades is a reflection of strategic planning, a strong academic foundation and a deep commitment to national goals such as the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4.0) and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) agenda.

“From our roots in engineering and technology, we now offer diverse academic disciplines including ICT, business management and applied sciences,” says Prof. Massila. “This allows us to support Malaysia’s wider development agenda and meet the demands of industries both locally and globally.”

The university also boasts strong postgraduate programmes and a growing international presence, with partnerships and offshore PhD initiatives that enhance UTeM’s academic reputation abroad. This global engagement is reinforced by collaborative research ventures, joint publications and student exchange programmes that promote internationalisation in higher education.

Central to UTeM’s success is its emphasis on research and innovation. “Through the Research, Innovation, Commercialisation and Entrepreneurship (RICE) framework, the university has established over 100 collaborations with industry stakeholders,” reveals Prof. Massila.

“Our RICE initiative enables us to transform academic research into practical applications. Whether it’s developing smart technologies, advancing software engineering practices, or offering consultancy services, we aim to make a tangible difference,” she adds.

UTeM’s focus on translational research—bridging the gap between theoretical research and real-world application—has led to breakthroughs in secure software, intelligent systems and blockchain technology. These efforts have also created avenues for academic commercialisation and community enhancement. The university’s growing portfolio of patents and intellectual property licensing showcases its strong innovation culture.

In a time when automation and digitalisation are reshaping the global workforce, UTeM remains proactive. “Our academic offerings are carefully aligned with evolving industry demands, incorporating elements such as artificial intelligence, big data, cybersecurity, and the Internet of Things (IoT),” says Prof. Massila.

One standout initiative is the Bachelor of Computer Science (Interactive Media) with Honours (BITM) programme, which blends technical training with creative disciplines like virtual reality, animation and UX design. “We believe that future professionals must not only understand technology but also have the creativity and empathy to use it meaningfully,” says Prof. Massila.

The university ensures that students are not only equipped with technical skills but also exposed to real-world challenges through internships, industrial projects and problem-based learning modules. “We focus on building resilience, adaptability and leadership qualities in our graduates,” explains Prof. Massila.

Academic staff regularly consult industry leaders to keep curricula relevant, while visiting lecturers from multinational companies enrich the classroom experience. Soft skills, entrepreneurship and digital literacy are integrated into every programme to ensure holistic development.

UTeM’s steady ascent is also reflected in the accolades it has received in recent years:

  • Recognised as Malaysia’s Best TVET University (Public University Category) at the 2024 Malaysia Education & TVET Awards
  • Winner of the National Energy Award 2024 for Energy Management in Large Buildings
  • Ranked 5th in Malaysia by the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking 2024
  • Included in the QS World University Rankings since 2023

“These achievements affirm our trajectory and the hard work of our students, staff and partners,” says Prof. Massila. These accomplishments also reflect the university’s long-term commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency and responsible governance.

UTeM holds firm to its belief that a university should serve the wider society. The institution runs a wide range of programmes to support underserved communities, including:

  • ‘Anak Emas Yayasan Canselor’ for underprivileged students
  • Biasiswa Kesidang (RM10 million) for local and international students from conflict zones
  • Biasiswa Sulung (RM1.25 million) for first-generation students
  • Kampung Angkat Madani programme to bridge rural-urban development gaps

UTeM also contributes to local capacity-building through digital upskilling workshops, environmental awareness campaigns and women empowerment initiatives. “We see ourselves as a university for society—where knowledge creation is coupled with knowledge sharing,” says Prof. Massila.

Innovation at UTeM extends beyond research labs into the realm of student entrepreneurship. Through its “Entrepreneurship for Young Entrepreneur (EYE)” programme, UTeM is fostering a vibrant startup ecosystem within campus.

“Our vision is ‘One Faculty, One Startup,’ and we support students with mentorship, funding and incubation facilities,” explains Prof. Massila. With support from the Ministry of Higher Education and industry partners like Maybank Islamic Berhad, programmes like EYE and MEET (Maybank Islamic Entrepreneurship Empowerment TVET) are equipping students—especially those from underprivileged backgrounds—with the tools to launch viable businesses.

“These efforts empower students not just to seek employment but to become job creators. Successful startups have emerged in areas such as renewable energy solutions, agritech and mobile applications, contributing back to the local economy and community,” says Prof. Massila.

UTeM plays a pivotal role in advancing Malaysia’s TVET aspirations. As Chair of the Malaysian Technical University Network (MTUN), the university leads discussions and initiatives that shape the national TVET narrative.

Initiatives under this umbrella include:

  • Accreditation of 100% of academic programmes to industry standards
  • Development of interdisciplinary TVET-aligned postgraduate programmes
  • TVET Women Academy to encourage female participation in technical fields
  • JELITA@KPT and TVET PLACE & TRAIN UTeM @ KPT summits to increase inclusivity in technical empowerment

In addition, UTeM’s Applied Mechanical Design Laboratory is now ISO 17025 accredited, making it a valuable facility for advanced TVET-based research and training. “We’re not just participating in the TVET movement—we are helping define its future,” Prof. Massila asserts.

Looking ahead, UTeM has set ambitious goals in line with the national and global higher education agenda. Among the university’s key focus areas for 2035 are:

  • Enhanced global academic partnerships and networks
  • Higher enrolment of international postgraduate students
  • A thriving innovation and commercialisation ecosystem
  • Deepened community engagement through technology
  • Institutional sustainability through ESG and SDG alignment

The university also aims to be at the forefront of green campus development, with smart infrastructure upgrades and low-carbon initiatives in the pipeline. Strategic investments are being made in digital transformation and artificial intelligence to further future-proof the institution.

“We envision UTeM as a global model for applied innovation and inclusive growth,” says Prof. Massila. “By aligning with sustainable development goals and ESG principles, we are creating a blueprint for universities of the future.”

As Malaysia strives to become a high-income digital economy, institutions like UTeM are at the forefront of that transformation. With a curriculum rooted in real-world challenges, a research agenda focused on industry relevance and an unwavering commitment to societal well-being, UTeM is more than a university—it is an engine of national progress.

As Prof. Massila succinctly puts it, “Education must go beyond the classroom. At UTeM, we believe in producing graduates who not only thrive in industry but uplift communities and create a better tomorrow.”

With a mission deeply aligned with national transformation plans, a culture that nurtures innovation and a heart for community impact, UTeM is clearly charting a path that leads not just to academic excellence, but to long-lasting societal value.
